The golden age of arcade video games was a very exciting time for those who experienced it along with companies and professionals developing the video games and arcade machines. During this time games that have become favourites to many young and old gamers were released including Space Invaders and Galaxian, Asteroids, Pac-Man, Frogger and Centipede.
By the time the golden age of arcade games started, video games had been played on computers for a while, but the technology had been lacking and not advanced to the point where arcade games could be commercially produced.
In order for this to happen there would need to be much more innovation and thinking outside the box. For example Space Invaders while using a black and white screen used coloured overlays giving the impression of depth and realism. This was a time when arcade video games were in their infant stages and quite expensive. Galaxian and Asteroids were two of the first memorable black and white video games. The switch to colour was a significant step forward that brought in a lot more people.
Early titles to transition to colour were Frogger and Centipede who took advantage and stood out from the regular black and white offerings at the time. This period also saw the establishment of many popular video game genres, including space-themed shooter games such as Defender and Galaga, maze chase games which followed the design established by Pac-Man, driving and racing games which more frequently used 3D…
