A Plague Tale series director Kevin Choteau has revealed that the first game had a very troubled development at the beginning. While A Plague Tale: Innocence had a bit of a cult following at first, the game would explode in popularity that led to a sequel, with reviews for A Plague Tale: Requiem reflecting how much the franchise has grown.
